Course Summary
Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (sUAV) are powerful tools for first responders. However, nighttime operations add complexity that requires specific training and equipment. The FAA maintains that an “applicant must assure all required persons participating in the small unmanned aircraft operation have the knowledge to recognize and overcome visual illusions caused by darkness and understand physiological conditions which may degrade night vision.” In this course, students identify night visual illusions and the physiological degradation occurring in darkness, then develop mitigating strategies. Students use state-of-the-art equipment to perform nighttime UAS operations couched in reality-based public safety mission sets.
Students will:
Receive at least six hours as a member of a nighttime UAS flight crew- Log at least two hours of flight time.
- Use thermal imagery equipped UAVs for nighttime operations
- Use Infrared equipped UAVs for nighttime operations
- Use white light equipped UAVs for nighttime operations
- Demonstrate support of nighttime public safety operations
- Understand the human physiological effects during night operations
- Identify visual illusions associated with night flying
- Develop techniques to mitigate the risks of night operations
- Examine equipment requirements for operating during hours of darkness

Recommended Prerequisite: RTC 48-hour UAS Operators Course or 32-hour Basic Pilots Course, or have an FAA Part 107 license

Florida’s Forensic Institute for Research, Security, and Tactics (F1RST) represents such a collaboration – a partnership between academia, practitioners, and the private-sector to develop a state-of-the-art research enterprise that will inform, innovate, and offer cutting-edge training. The first site, located in Land O’ Lakes, Florida, contains the Thomas Varnadoe Forensics Center for Research and Education, two outdoor forensic anthropology fields for research and mock training, and an intelligence center that will be the hub for the innovation, evaluation, and promotion of new methods to assist with impacting crime, enhancing response to manmade and natural disasters, and ensuring safer communities. The Land O’ Lakes site is also home to the Helen A. Rich K9 Training and Research Campus centered on advancing the field of working dogs in public safety, a hangar for the research, development, testing and evaluation of unmanned systems, as well as a leadership training center to focus on refining and revolutionizing the skills, tactics, and capabilities of first responders across the country. Lastly, the site supports a cyber research and education facility to continue to prepare leaders for responding to threats in a digital world.
